The Housewives' Reviews
GLAMOUR MAGAZINE -
WOMEN RIGHT NOW
THEY'RE YOUNG, HIP, and play a mean
washboard and broom guitar. When they're not "Ironing Bored,"
they're The Housewives, a trio of domesticated singer/songwriters who manage
to find creativity and humor in everyday chores. Vacuuming and doing the
dishes hardly seem the stuff of rock'n'roll inspiration, but that's exactly
what they are for the Los Angeles group, which includes Hope Juber (wife
of former Wings guitarist Laurence Juber), Maggie Mayall (wife of blues
great John Mayall) and Lisa Harrison (wife of ex-Walton Jon Walmsley who
plays guitar for Richard Marx). The three, who have impressive artistic
credits of their own, share the view that being a housewife is something
to be proud of.
"We're glorifying things everybody has to deal with," says Juber.
"Everyone can relate to the idea of taking care of her own domestic
situation -- and to serious aspects of family relationships."
The Housewives are cleaning up at L.A. night spots like Café Largo
and China Club. they also do frequent benefits for causes like AIDS and
the homeless. Exploring rock genres from pop to blues to Motown, they dish
up a very visual act: "In Sink and At Your Disposal," "Ironing
Bored" and "It Sucks" (a love song between vacuum cleaners)
are performed complete with the appropriate appliances.
"I thought it would be a great idea for women to get together and
sing about things they know," says Juber, the group's originator and
mother of two. With a record, video, and possible sitcom in the works,
The Housewives do just that.
